The tradition of pregnant women wearing safety pin originated from Yoruba people.

There is a taboo "eewo" in Yorùbáland that pregnant woman must not walk outside when it is sunny for fear of a evil spirits replacing the baby in her womb. 

So, any woman who decides to walk in the sun must tie a pin or needle around her cloth in obeisance to Ògún, whom the Yorùbá believe to be the Orisa of iron. 

With a pin or needle around the woman’s 

cloth, it is believed that Ògún will guard against any evil occurrence to the baby in the womb.
