MAT MAKING/WEAVING IN YORUBALAND
The Ijeshas are one of the groups most renowned in Yorubaland for their mat weaving expertise.
That is why their Oriki refers to them as “Ọmọ ẹlẹni atẹka, ẹlẹni ẹwẹlẹ”, Meaning (The children of those who weave fanciful mats).
Various parts of Yorubaland are known for their specialization in specific arts and crafts.
Some areas specialize in weaving clothes, some are known for carving, others are known for dyeing, bead making, masonry, pottery, Iron smithing, glass making. Etc.
That was the economic model of Yorubaland in the times past, skill specialization and comparative advantage based on natural dispositions.
That model can be brought back today to increase economic productivity in our region, through the ONE REGION, ONE PRODUCT model.
