The Society of African Missions (SMA, Societas Missionum ad Afros ), also called African Missions of Lyon , is a community of Catholic missionaries , organized as a society of apostolic life founded in 1856 and present on four continents: Africa, America, Asia, and Europe. They arrived in Nigeria around 1895 and started in the major cities.
In 1913, in Usi-Ekiti, five young Usi men took a trip to Ibadan to invite Fr. Louis Friess, a French priest of the Society Missin to share about the Catholic Faith in Usi. They, along with Fr. Friess, traveled by train to Offa and then walked to Usi-Ekiti.
On March 19th 1913, Fr. Friess held the first Mass in Ekitiland. And this was the beginning of the catholic faith present in Ekiti today.
A Centenary celebrations in Ekiti diocese was held in 2013 by SMA.
