The myth and stories about the Melon plant

The Melon Plant
The melon plant, a creeping stem, is very common especially
in the savanna areas of Yorubaland. In this excerpt, the melon
plant is depicted as a person originally barren who was asked
to perform two sacrifices. The first one was to enable her to
produce children while the second one was to prevent human
beings from killing her children. Melon Plant did not perform
the second sacrifice and that is why human beings ‘kill’ and
make use of melon seeds.
Today the victim is Melon Plant,
Tomorrow the victim is Melon Plant.
Ifa divination was performed for Melon Plant
Who was going on her annual visit to the farm
Weeping for lack of children.
Melon Plant lacked children.
She was barren.
She was as unproductive as the rock.
She saw the hen with her chicks,
And burst into tears.
She added two cowry shells to three
And went to an Ifa priest.
Could she possibly have a child?
That was the problem upon which she consulted Ifa.
She was told there was good prospect of her having
children.
But she was warned to perform a sacrifice.
She was told to perform a sacrifice in order to have
many children;
And to perform sacrifice so that huntan beings might
not kill the children.
Melon Plant performed a sacrifice in order to have
many children
But she did not perform a sacrifice against the plan

of her enemies.

After she had performed the sacrifice,
She was told to carry it outside the city walls.
She was told that wherever she deposited the sacrifice.
She should make the place her home,
And live there.
She did so,
And had many children.
But because of the sacrifice against the plan of enemies
Which she neglected,
Every year, human beings
Kill and eat up her children.
It was with regret that she praised her Ifa priests.
She said: ‘Today the victim is Melon Plant.
Tomorrow the victim is Melon Plant.
Ifa divination was performed for Melon Plant
Who was going on her annual visit to the farm.
It is the performance of a sacrifice that brings blessings.
Neglect of sacrifice blesses no man.
Very soon,
At no distant date,
Come and see the prediction of Ifa priest
Coming to pass.
lfa has surely come, the great authority.
Palm-tree, whose predictions come true speedily.
