Are women bigger than IFA ?

There are verses and proverbs that refer to the spiritual power of women and their association with the Ìyáàmi—often called Ìyáàmi Òsòròngá, Eleye, or Àjè. These are the primordial, mystical mothers who hold immense spiritual force and are both revered and feared.

One common IFA verse from Odu Ose Meji reflects this:

“Obinrin ni Ìyáàmi. Àwon ni ń gbe Èlèyé.”
“It is women who are the Ìyáàmi. They are the ones who carry the power of the birds (Eleye).”

Another version:

“Ìyáàmi Osòròngá, Àjè, Àjébíyà, Àwòró.”
“My Mysterious Mothers, the Witches, the Life-Givers, the Keepers of Sacred Power.”

These verses acknowledge that women are the vessels of the power of the Eleye, and through them flows the ase .

Feminine energy are deeply respected and often considered untouchable, even by Orunmila himself.

From Odu Osa Meji, there is a reference to their mystery and power:

“Ìyáàmi Osòròngá, ẹni tí Orunmila kò le fi ọwọ́ kan.”
“The Mysterious Mothers, whom even Orunmila cannot touch.”

This verse implies that the power of the Iyami is so vast and sacred that even Orunmila (IFA) must approach with reverence and caution

Women conceive the world in their womb

A verse from Odu Obara Meji reflects this:

“Obinrin ni mo fi da Ile aye.”
“It was with the woman that I created the earth.”

And another powerful line:

“Obinrin lo bi gbogbo wa.”
“It is woman who gave birth to us all.”

These verses honor the woman as the cosmic womb — the honour through which all existence was made manifest.

Odu Osa Meji, it says:

“Obinrin ni Ìyáàmi, Obinrin ni Olomo, Obinrin ni Olodumare fi agbara han.”
“Woman is the sacred mother, woman is the bearer of children, woman is the one through whom Olodumare shows divine power.”

If women has this energy why would they want to be initiated into IFA ?

From Odu Oyeku Meji:
“Orunmila lo fi Osun gba agbara.”
“Orunmila used Osun to gain his power.”

This line reflects the idea that Orunmila’s success and wisdom were partly influenced by Osun, the Orisa of beauty, love, and fertility.

Orunmila acknowledges the power that flows through Osun, and by aligning with her energy, his work flourished.

From Odu Osa Meji:
“Orunmila lo fi Ìyáàmi Osòròngá gba ìmọ́.”
“Orunmila used the energy of the Ìyáàmi Osòròngá to gain wisdom.”

This verse underscores the sacred relationship between Orunmila and the Ìyáàmi, who represent mysterious maternal forces that provide spiritual insight, guidance, and power.
