Although Esu is believed to be one of the gods, he does not
always favour his fellow gods, and unlike the other gods, he
does not always support human beings.
It seems plausible to
hold that the action of Esu in supporting or opposing any
power or being is dictated sometimes by his own whims andcaprices, and sometimes by a genuine desire to punish offenders,
especially those who have neglected the prescribed sacrifice.
Esu, therefore, assumes the role of an impartial police officer,
punishing those who have disturbed the order of the universe.
