Orisa OSUN AND her BRASS

Orisa OSUN AND her BRASS

THE INTERESTING ASSOCIATION OF OSUN AND BRASS

Fans made of different materials, but most especially Brass (Idẹ) are some of the objects most closely connected to or associated with Ọ̀ṣun.

The brass is cast into bells (Aja), swords, fans, hair pins, ladles, rattles, animal motifs such as crocodiles, trinkets, bowls, and combs (Òòyà) which either adorn the adherents or used for other functional aesthetics.

In Yoruba godlore, although Obalufon is credited with gifting humanity with Glass & Brass while Olokun gifted humanity with beads & corals, the precious alloy is most closely associated with Osun, who is often depicted carrying a brass fan in one hand and a brass machete in the other.

The brass fan often accompanied by a mirror portrays her cool, beauty (almost bordering on vanity), motherly, nurturing side while the Machete/cutlass appropriately depicts the fiery warrior goddess that Osun can often be.

Little wonder that Osun can not be fully appreciated nor well described without the mentio of her precious brass, Idẹ!

ORISA OSUN’S LEGACY

ORISA OSUN’S LEGACY

OSUN’S LEGACY IN YORUBALANDS

The orthodox Ango know YEYE OSUN according to her AFRICAN legacy, she is IYA IJUMU, IYEYE NI I IMO (Mother of Ijumu, Great Mother of Knowledge) OSUN NI OLU AGAJA, (The Great Chief who bestows knowledge) AWURA (The Secret essence of GOLD.

Other ESE (verse) of IFA ODU, OSE’TURA give the circumstances of Her Sacred Birth, and the Struggles she had to overcome in learning about her own destiny.

Her life experience set forth in this ODU established the mandate that also governs the lives of HER genetic descendants who automatically inherit this BIRTHRIGHT, and ‘MARK’ their destines as well

The ancient BABALLAWOS indicate that when OSUN was in the WORLD, she resided close to fist. In describing HER, the AWOS also say, ‘DE, DE, DE’  which means that OSUN adorned herself in the most elegant ‘ASHO FUNFUN’ (white cloth) and wore many BRASS Bracelets on BOTH her RIGHT and LEFT arms.

The OSUN PRIESTS of YORUBALAND also wear BRIGHT RED CORAL BRACELETS on their risks. This is how OSUN made her presence on EARTH.

Also, in YORUBALAND, OSUN is known to be partial to the following items of which find themselves in the OSUN SHRINE.

ORUNMILA was the first ORISA to marry OSUN. An ESE of IFA

Ogunda’Se says that during their marriage, ORUNMILA bestowed upon her 16 COWRIES as a WEDDING GIFT which her PRIESTS and others use even to this to communicate with the heavens on behalf of their constituency.

Being married to ORUNMILA also enabled the beautiful ORISA to be worshiped on the same day as her FIRST HUSBAND ORUNMILA.

This is the reason why OSUN is VENERATED on the same day in conjunction with ORUNMILA’S sacred day of worship.

Unfortunately during her first marriage, OSUN did not became pregnant.

In AFRICAN TRADITIONS and CULTURE this is most distressing because children are a priority in marriage.

Despondent over her situation, she wanted her husband to have children and so she decided to allow him that right.

She reluctantly left ORUNMILA and nine months later, met and later married  her second husband SANGO AYILEDGE ORUN.

Their personalities hit it right off and they were very happy as husband and wife.

However, their legendary love and adoration for each other could not remedy OSUN’S inability to conceive children from her new husband, Sango Ayiledge Orun.

In desperation they both performed all kinds of SPIRITUAL RITUALS, all to no avail!

Since they could not remove the obstacles through ritual OSUN did not give up.

She talked it over with Sango and they both agreed that she would gather ‘TWO and add it to three’ and, go back to her first husband, ORUNMILA and let him consult IFA on her behalf to ascertain the depths of what was going on.

When OSUN got to ORUNMILA’S house, He was very happy to see her and proceeded immediately to consult IFA.

A troubled one hangs her belongings Ifa cast on behalf of Aridedge (Sango) Who was the son of ESEMOWE (Sango’s mother) The one who gave lots of BRASS BRACELETS to children to calm them.

Is unable to conceive her own children by her own efforts, OLODUMARE will bring forth many children from her womb OSUN proclaimed that if one’s character is not good, it will transmit over to others for the head that is good will transcend to others.

OSUN will not die without having given birth to the world.

ORI ‘OLUSONWON’ will help OSUN.

ORUNMILA assured OSUN that this episode of not having a child would soon come to an end its remedy rested indeed in the palace of ORUN (Heaven).

Her original roots begin in heaven and She would have to travel to heaven to seek out her cure.

Her barrenness would turn into fertility, and OLODUMARE will open doors for children to come into world.

He advised OSUN to gather the times he told her and he would offer a special sacrifice, OSUN did as directed and afterwards, ORUNMILA performed a special ritual on OSUN and prepared her for the next stage of the ritual.

The next thing OSUN knew, she was in the heavens listening to the voice of OLODUMARE, who asked her what had caused her to be there.

OSUN remained speechless and OLODUMARE told her to relax and calm herself.

After offering her a seat, He began to talk about how her other colleagues had also come to heaven to ask for similar things and the ‘CHILDREN’ of HEAVEN would run away from them for no apparent reason.

Then OLODUMARE opened the door to where the children were. It was a most beautiful children running and down like locust.

When the children saw OSUN, they ran towards her and she put a secret something into each of their hands.

As soon as she began to taste it, more and more children gathered around her. She continued to give them the mysterious substance as they followed her to the junction between heaven and earth.

Once the children arrived at this point, they stopped abruptly.

OSUN gave the children the remaining goodies from the pot atop her head and came on back to the world.

Upon her arrival, she noticed that the children had disappeared and started to cry.

She broke down in tears and told ORUNMILA about what she had experienced in her beautiful dream.

ORUNMILA advised OSUN not to cry anymore and CONGRATULATED her. He told her that she was pregnant and would deliver soon.

When OSUN became three months pregnant her body changed and many barren women also became pregnant.

When the pregnancy blossomed at nine months nothing could hold back the NEWBORNS that came into the world.

OSUN used her secrets to cool the fevers of her children. OLRUNMILA commanded the women to preform sacrifice on behalf of their CHILDREN and also to OSUN to show their GRADITUDE.

As one performs the atonement, the following should be song:

E ba wa ki

YeYe O!

A fi ide re Omo

E ba wa ki YeYe O?

A fi ide re Omo

A Story and Myths about one of ÔRISÂ OSUN's incarnation

A Story and Myths about one of ÔRISÂ OSUN's incarnation

This is just a myth, only OSUN can tell if it's true or not. But it's a good loving story.

The Orisa OSUN have had many incarnations.

In one of those incarnations referencing her birth.

It happened on a very clear day, OLOFIN is one of the guardians who resides in ORUN which is the abode of HEAVEN.

OLOFIN is referred to as the OWNER of the PALACE in ORUN. On this particular clear day, OLOFIN came down to EARTH, sitting in a canoe which was without any oars, he was sailing very PEACEFULLY on a DEEP, CALM and RIVER.

It just so happened that this canoe was taken by itself FAR, FAR, FAR away until it came to the shores of a big village very deep into the BUSH COUNTRY.

OLOFIN then gets out and walks to the VILLAGE. There He greeted the people at the place where they celebrated their council and spoke to them.

The people there were very happy because BABA OLOFIN, had visited them.

When He finished speaking, He got thirsty and asked for fresh water. The ELDER of the tribe asked a young girl to bring water to Him.

When BABA OLOFIN laid eyes on Her, He was overwhelmed with Love for her instantly.

Not only was She outrageously beautiful, She was very clean, Her Head was adorned with Flowers, and She seemed very much concerned with doing Her tasks correctly and tried sincerely to please Him in every way She could.

The attraction was so overpowering and correct that same day, BABA OLOFIN took her as HIS WIFE and carried HER with HIM.

Her name was MYBOYA KAI, and She never came back to the land of Her birth.

MYBOYA KAI gave birth to a Beautiful baby girl who they called OSHUN OMI PASHANGARA in honor of the Rivers Village where they had met.

BABY OSHUN grew more beautiful everyday with over flowing JOY, LAUGHTER, and a CONTAGIOUS HAPPINESS. Her (mother) MBOYA KAI, loved Her more than anything else in the world.

In fact all the CREATURES of the WATERS, the air, and EARTH loved OSHUN.

It also happened that BABA OLOFIN became overwhelmed with envy. He became very jealous of the shine and attention His Daughter received.

The focus was not on him. ALL of His WIVES attentions, ALL  of the ANIMALS attentions, and ALL of the PEOPLES attentions, were were now for OSHUN.

HE couldn’t move His canoe in the WATER, because the RIVER, would not move unless OSHUN was in the canoe.

He could not FISH because the FISH would not bite unless OSUN asked them to do so.

NO BIRD would SING, unless OSHUN was there to Hear their singing.

By this time BABA OLOFIN, was so filled with jealousy that HE lost his mind completely.

On one very Dark day, so blinded and enraged He took OSHUN to the Peak of a very high mountain and threw Her to the abyss.

OSHUN fell, and fell, and fell………but do not fear…….At the Foot of the cliff, there was a BIG RIVER which lead to a LAKE so immense that its shores couldn’t be seen.

When OSHUN FELL, ALL THE WATERS PARTED, and ALL THE FISHES made a SOFT NET with their BODIES so she wouldn’t be hurt.

They then took Her to the deepest part of the River to a cave where an Old Siren names OTOYAMA OLOKUN resided.

OTOYAMA gave her refuge and told Her, you may stay here as long as you need to be.

OLOFIN will never find you here.MY KINGDOM is YOUR KINGDOM.

OSHUN thanked her and soon was asleep.

She was tired, she had just suffered a horrible scare. All the noises from the living creatures of the waters ceased so she could have a restful and peaceful sleep.

Peace reigned in all the waters. OSHUN was safe, she had found a home!

OLOFIN had hardly finished throwing OSHUN off the cliff when MYBOYE asked in anguish what he had done with Her daughter.

OLOFIN did not answer her, He was like an idiot, He couldn’t talk or remember what had happened. Like a mad person MBOYA ran to the forest in search of Her daughter, calling loudly OSHUN MI…….OSHUN MI…….

Have you ever heard the noise the winds makes in the trees deep in the forest?

Have you ever heard the noise inside a sea shell when you place it to your ear?
Have you ever heard the noise that a river makes when it comes to the villages?

YES!…..Well, it is the voice of MBOYA still searching for Her daughter.

NO MOTHER can ever stop searching for a lost child! NO MOTHER can ever rest until SHE FINDS her child!

It so happened that one day OLOFIN recovered his memory, He remembered what He had done.

Overtaken with remorse, He wished with all his heart that OSHUN was alive, that HE had not listened to JEALOUSY.

He wanted to find her. He wanted her forgiveness.

He asked the Sea, “Sea, Sea, have you seen my Daughter OSHUN?”

He asked the Earth, “Earth, have you seen my Daughter OSHUN?

And to the SEA, the RIVERS, the LAKES, the TREES, and ALL the BIRDS and ANIMALS, to EVERYONE, HE ASKED, ALL responded, “NO, NO, we have not seen her”.

GIVING UP hope of ever seeing Her again, OLOFIN locked Himself inside a CLOUD and CRIED.

HE CRIED so much, that all of the EARTH was covered with HIS TEARS.  There was so much water coming from HEAVEN that very few survived.

Knowing of OSHUN’S NOBLE birth, OTOYAMA OLOKUN had kept Her well hidden where NO ONE could SEE Her, where NO ONE could Harm Her.

She trusted only a CHAMELEON and a PARROT. They should keep a lookout in case OLOFIN decided to go to the bottom of the River.

So it happened that one day the WATERS from HEAVEN stopped. OLOFIN has stopped crying.

AGGAYU SOLA came out and shone upon the EARTH.

OSAIN came to EARTH and filled it with NEW PLANTS, TREES, FLOWERS, and everything which is of his domain.

Everything was like it was before……

However OLOFIN never gave up looking for his daughter.

HE kept hoping that some how OSUN survived and was alive.

By truth and fairness absolutely no one knew of her whereabouts.

OOLOFIN decided to stay longer on EARTH and it so happened that one day He met a CHAMELEON and asked him, “CHAMELEON, have you seen my daughter?”

NOT wanting to meddle in what was not his affair, CHAMELEON said to HIM, “Most certainly it seems to me that in a RIVER, or LAKE, I think I have seen a beautiful girl, BUT I couldn’t tell you which RIVER, or which LAKE, or the girl’s name.

“Try to remember and I will reward you handsomely”

“WELL, the thing is that I walked and walked all over the EARTH, and I have a BAD memory. I can’t even remember what color my skin is…….

It was before so much water came down.

I believe it was a RIVER at the foot of a large mountain nearby.

OLOFIN left, full of enthusiasm. He remembered the MOUNTAIN and the RIVER at the bottom of the cliff .

The CHAMELEON being so afraid of OLOFIN that He had betrayed OTOYAMA.

so He called the PARROT and told Him, “Fly to the RIVER and warn OSHUN Her Father is looking for her”.

The PARROT flew to the RIVER, but OLOFIN got there first. He knelt by the RIVER SHORE and began to call OSHUN…..OSHUN…. please come to me”.

It was not long before She came out to the RIVER’S SHORE in quiring, “What is it you want from me good man?…….Why have you called me with such insistence?”

OLOFIN looked at Her, and for a while couldn’t speak.  The words wouldn’t come out His mouth.

OSHUN insisted, “Tell me, what it is you want”
OLOFIN embraced and hugged Her very gently while saying with Tears in His eyes:

“I AM YOUR FATHER….. I HAVE COME TO BEG YOUR FORGIVENESS”.
“I FORGAVE YOU LONG AGO” answered OSHUN,

“In MY heart there is nothing but LOVE and UNDRSTANDING for you.

SEARCH NO MORE, I am VERY HAPPY HERE. Any time you want to visit me, come to the RIVER’S WATER. THIS IS MY HOME”.

On this day the bad energy between DAUGHTER and FATHER was appeased and to speak for a very long time.

They LAUGHED a little bit, they CRIED a little bit and at the End of the day, OLOFIN thanked OTOYAMA OLOKUN for taking such great care of OSUN and told Her to keep ALL the SECRETS, MYSTERIES and TREASURES of the SEAS.

OSUN was given the same gifts and the DOMAIN over the RIVERS an LAKES of the WORLD.

It also happened that OLOFIN went back to HIS PALACE in the SKY where He had come many, many years before.

This is a Story that happened during the GOLDEN AGE, in the beginning of Creation during which Orisa were ascending and descending from HEAVEN to EARTH and actually live among the people.

During such times Each ORISA left attributes and legacies and standards modeling behaviors and gifts.

As you read through each of these many stories you will gain knowledge and understanding of their character, symbols etc.

OSUN AND YEMOJA

OSUN has a very contagious laugh that is quite effective in gatherings.

She loves to make everyone in the ORISA FEAST happy.

PRIESTESSES of OSUN are known to be GOOD LOVERS, but a bit on the LAZY side when it comes to work.

They would rather rely on YEMOJA to do most of their chores, including raising their children.

This is a trait of OSUN because as siblings YEMOJA is the Oldest Sister and OSUN was the BABY and spoiled.

YEMOJA had such strong SUPERNATURAL PARENTING GIFTS.

YEMOJA is therefore  known as the MOTHER, the OWNER of MOTHERHOOD.

Everyone looks to  YEMOJA as a role model when it comes to mastery in childrearing and nurturing.
ODU OSE -TURA and ORISA OSUN

ODU OSE -TURA and ORISA OSUN

OSE-TURA is the Holy ODU in IFA that speaks about OSUN  being sent to maintain the world order.

The world (other IRUMOLE)  did not invite her to help with the work. They only sent her the animals that they had sacrificed to cook after offering them.

After OSUN prepared the food, they prevented her from eating any of the food.

OSUN became very, very angered.

OSUN began to use the power of the IYA-MI-AJE and the ANCESTRAL MOTHERS.

This awesome power of the AJE  mothers made everything they did useless.

The deities did not understand what was happening. They had never been dismissed by the Supreme Being OLODUMARE before and all their efforts and petitions and ceremonies were becoming fruitless.

They came together for consult with ORUNMILA and it was suggested they consult IFA.ORUNMILA brought out his instruments of DIVINATION and consulted IFA.

The ODU that appeared on the board for the first time he called it by the name OSE-TURA.

ORUNMILA departed to seek help from the Supreme Being, OLODUMARE on the ODU.

It was there that he met ESU-ODARA. ESU was with the Supreme Being OLODUMARE.

ESU narrated to OLODUMARE the damage that had been done to the work of those on earth because they had failed to invite the person who constituted the seven tenth among them.

For this everything was being destroyed.

The Supreme Being OLODUMARE understood. When ORUNMILA presented their grievances, OLODUMARE told them to apologize to OSUN and to invite her to participate in all the sacrifices that they offered.

Everything became calm again after they agreed to let OSUN the SEVENTEENTH among them see all their secrets and attend all their meetings.

One condition, now that they were satisfied she said that she would carry a child in her stomach.

They must make this child a male child and this child will accompany them in their work as a substitute for her.

They used their power of ASE that the child would be born a masculine sex.

They placed their ASE each day above the head of OSUN and prayed until the time of OSUN’S delivery arrived.

She gave birth to the child.

After the NINETH DAY she permitted them to see the child for the naming ceremony.

When they saw it was a male child they rejoiced. Each one carried the child and blessed him.

“What type of name shall we give him?” ORISANLA said. “You all know very well that each day we BLESSED his MOTHER with our power so that she could give birth to a child of masculine sex.

This child shall justly be called ASRTUWA, which translates, Power brought him us”

ORUNMILA consulted the Oracle about this child as to its destiny. They gathered the instruments of IFA in order to consult for him to determine the ODU he was born under, so that they could initiate him into the society of IFA.

He was taken in the forest to the IGBO ‘DU, where IFA revealed that OSE and OTURA were to be his ODU.

ORUNMILA said, “the child that OSE and OTURA caused to be born will be formerly called ASETUWA.”

He said,”It is for this reason that we shall call the child by the name of the ODU of IFA that gave him birth, OSETUA.

“ASETUWA was the name he carried formerly. Thus the child participated in the group of the other ODU to the point of going with them to all the places where the offerings were made on the earth.

OSUN herself gave this child a name on he day. She called him OSO, meaning that the child was the son of magical power because she herself was an AJE.

An aspect of the power of IYA-MI.

She said, “AKIN ASO” a powerful male brave man, recipient of a great supernatural power.

This is why they called OSETUA, AKIN OSO, among the sixteen Most Powerful ODU and among all the ODU IFA.

Afterwards they said that in whatever place the Great Ones met it shall be compulsory that the child be with them.

If they cannot meet with the 17th member they cannot arrive at a decision.

Finally it happened! There was a drought on the earth. Everything was dry. No moisture anywhere. It had been three years since the last rain fall. The world fell into decadence.

These ODU returned to consult IFA. IFA AJALAIYE. IFA AJALAIYE said, they must make an offering to be delivered to the Supreme Being OLODUMARE, so that the Supreme Being could have mercy on them.

OLODUMARE  had seemingly removed himself from the affairs of the earth. If this continued, destruction was inevitable it was imminent.

If they could only make the offering to the Supreme Being ,OLODUMARE would always have compassion on them.

HE, SHE, ITSELF would remember and guard the world.

They prepared the offering. They gathered all the animals, fish, fowl, palm oil, eggs and pure white cloth. They prepared the offering using IFA leaves that all offerings must contain. They made a large bundle and said;

EJI-OGBE must carry this offering to ORUN which is HEAVEN, to the SUPREME BEING.

EJI-OGBE carried the offering to the doors of ORUN. The doors did not open for him.

On the seconf day OYEKY-MEJI carried the offering to the doors of ORUN, the doors did not open for him.

Each of the 16 ODU tries to take the offering to the doors of HEAVEN ORUN but they could not enter.

The SUPREME BEING did not open the doors.

So they said that the 17th among them must go and test his power.

OSETUA the 17th was told to visit certain diviners so that they could consult the Oracle for him.

He consulted the Oracle, they cast IFA for AKIN OSO OSETUA Son of ENINARE OSUN on the day he was to carry the sacrifice to the POWERFUL HEAVEN. They said he must make an offering. They said he would be covered in honors. They said he should succeed to the position that he shall reach. They said this position shall be forever, and shall never disappear.

They said the honors that he shall receive there, the respect shall be interminable.

They said, “You shall see an ANCIENT ONE on the road, do him well.”

When OSETUA finished preparing , and when he was on the road taking his offering to ESU, he met an ANCIENT ONE.

This ANCIENT ONE was from The Origin of EXISTENCE. He said, “AKIN ASO! to whose house are you going today.” He said, “I heard rumors in regards to all of you in the house of OLOFIN, that the 16 oldest ODU carried an offering to the POWERFUL HEAVEN without success.

OSETUA said “It is so.”

The ANCIENT ONE said, “Is it your turn today?” He said”It is my turn.”

The ANCIENT ONE said, “You took food today? OSETUA said that he had eaten.

The ANCIENT ONE said, “When you arrive at your location, tell them that you shall not go today.

” He said, “when you want to go tomorrow, you must not eat, you must not drink before you go there.”

He told OSETUA that he must then carry the sacred offering to ORUN.

He told OSETUA the other ODU had failed because they had eaten of the foods of the earth, this is the reason why the SUPREME BEING, did not open the door for them.

When OSETUA returned to the house of OBA AJALIAIYE, all the ODU- IFA had gathered there. They said, “You  must be very fast now, it is your day to take the offering to ORUN the HEAVENS perhaps the door shall be opened by you.

” OSETUA said that he had consumed food today and was told not to eat before taking the offering to ORUN.

The following day OSETUA met ESU. He asked ESU what must he do? ESU responded “Why are you asking me now? You never thought to ask me for advise before you left. He asked OSETUA if he had eaten. OSETUA told him that the ANCIENT One had told him the previous evening that he must eat absolutely nothing.

Then OSETUA and ESU continued along the road together.

They went in the direction of the doors of ORUN. When they arrived there, they found THE DOORS OF HEAVEN OPEN WIDE.

When they carried the offering to the SUPREME BEING, OLODUMARE HE/SHE/ It questioned them OLODUMARE and said, “Haaa!’ “You saw the last time it rained on earth? I asked myself if the earth was not completely destroyed? What could be found?” OSETUA could not open his mouth to say anythhing. The SUPREME BEING, OLODUMARE gave OSETUA some bundles of rain.

OLODUMARE also collected as before, the things of value in HEAVEN which is in ORUN that were necessary for the survival of the world and gave them to OSETUA.

OLODUMARE told OSETUA that he must return.

When they left the dwelling place of the SUPREME BEING, OLODUMARE, OSETUA lost one of the bundles of rain.

Then rain began to fall on the earth. It rained, rain, rain ,rain, and it rained. When OSETUA returned to the world he went to the house of the OKRA, IIA.

He went to the house of YAYAA and he went to the house of palm. They were producing seeds and buds. He went to the house of OBA AJALAIYE.

ASE had expanded and extended itself above the earth.

Semen converted itself into children. Men on their beds of suffering raised themselves up, and everybody was happy.

The new harvests were brought from the fields. Yams were produced, corn grew, the rain continued to fall.

The rivers overflowed. Everybody was happy.

When OSETUA arrived, he was mounted on a powerful steed. The people were rich and happy.

They covered him with presents, they were on his right side, they were on his left side. They began to salute OSETUA.

“You OSETUA you are unique. You succeeded in carrying the offering to the highest heaven.

. All the gifts and offerings OSETUA received, he gave to ESU ODARA.

When he gave them to ESU ODARA, ESU ODARA said, “You OSETUA! All the sacrifices that they make on earth, are they not delivered first to you, so that you can bring them to me?

Thus OSUN giving birth to OSETUA a male, re-established a harmonious relationship between the IYA-MI, the Mothers of the World and the 16th ORISA-AGBA. saving the earth from chaos and from annihilation.

He was the only one who could open the doors of HEAVEN and deliver the offerings to the feet of OLODUMARE the SUPREME BEING.
